Methods for Mold Maintenance and Replacement in Copper Profile Extrusion Presses
04 Nov,2025
Mold maintenance and replacement for copper profile extrusion presses are critical to ensuring the press operates properly and that product quality is maintained.
Mold maintenance must begin with daily routines. After production ends or when the machine is shut down, the mold should be cleaned promptly. Although the standby material can provide some cleaning, the die head is difficult to dissipate heat once removed, and high temperatures can cause the standby material to decompose and corrode the flow channels. Additionally, thin and small material-stop ribs and support ribs may deform, and deposits that precipitate inside the flow channels cannot be removed by the standby material alone. Therefore, after shutdown, the die head should be disassembled into individual parts and thoroughly cleaned. During disassembly, use a brass wedge to gently and evenly pry the die head out of the draft groove; avoid using iron wedges to pry or hammer on one side only, as this can damage the mating surfaces and locating pins of the die head. Residual material in the flow channels can be grasped with needle-nose pliers and then forcibly pulled out by blowing compressed air.
After the die head has been thoroughly cleaned and reassembled, apply high-temperature grease to the threaded surfaces and locating pins to prevent rusting and seizing. The flow channels should be sprayed with a lubricating, anti-rust grease to minimize corrosion caused by gases and moisture. For the vacuum slots and vent holes in the shaping die, remove any deposits or impurities using soft materials such as copper sheets, ensuring that the air passages remain unobstructed and vacuum adsorption is uniform. The cooling water channels should be purged and cleaned with compressed air to prevent scale and other impurities from accumulating and causing blockages.
When the die exhibits severe wear, deformation, or damage that adversely affects product quality, it must be replaced promptly. To replace the die, first disconnect the extruder’s power supply and allow the equipment to cool completely. Then, following the disassembly procedure, remove the old die and install the new one, ensuring a secure fit and precise alignment. After installation, perform commissioning and verify the die’s operational condition.
Proper maintenance and timely replacement of dies for copper profile extrusion presses can extend die life and ensure the efficient operation of the extrusion press.
